Marine Growth Barnacle Removal Kamsar
Barnacles are the best-known form of hard fouling. They attach themselves firmly, grow quickly in warm water and make a ship's hull rough. Marine growth and barnacle removal in Kamsar needs more effort than slime cleaning, and the Diver must take care to remove the shells without damaging the coating or the steel underneath.
How Barnacles Grow
Barnacle larvae float in the water and settle on any suitable surface. They then secrete a hard cement and build a shell. In warm, nutrient-rich water like that off Kamsar, a barnacle can reach a visible size within a few weeks. They often settle in clusters at the waterline, around sea chests and on the propeller, rudder and bilge keel, where flow is low or the coating has worn.
The Damage They Cause
- Increased hull friction, which raises fuel use and reduces speed.
- Restricted water flow to sea chests, causing engine cooling problems.
- Damage to the coating when shells are pulled off, leaving the steel open to corrosion.
- Hidden damage: growth can cover corrosion, dents and cracks.
- Biosecurity risk, as barnacles may carry other organisms.
Removal Methods
For light growth, rotary brushes are enough. For established barnacles, we use stiffer brushes, hand scrapers, scrapers with long handles and, where suitable, high-pressure water tools. The Diver works in small areas and checks the surface as he goes, so that the shells are removed completely, including the base plate which can stay attached after the shell is broken.
Protecting the Coating
The coating under heavy fouling is often already damaged, and rough cleaning can peel off more paint. For this reason, we first inspect by CCTV, test a small patch and adjust the tools. If bare steel is exposed, the Diver photographs it, and we propose touch-up or a temporary protection measure, with the owner's agreement. Corrosion starts quickly on bare steel in warm seawater.
Sea Chests and Intakes
Barnacles in sea chests and intakes are especially dangerous. They can block gratings, restrict flow and break loose later, drawing into strainers and pumps. We clean the gratings, check the strainers and record the condition by video. The chief engineer should always be informed when a sea chest is found blocked, as it may point to wider cooling issues.
After Removal
A final inspection confirms that the surface is clean and notes any areas needing further attention. We recommend repeating the check after a period, especially for ships that remain at Kamsar for a long time, as barnacles can return within weeks.
Request Barnacle Removal
Send us photographs or details of the fouling, and we will plan the work.
Preventing Barnacle Build-Up at the Anchorage
Prevention is cheaper than removal. Keeping antifouling paint in good condition, cleaning the waterline and propeller regularly and moving machinery where possible all slow barnacle growth. Where a ship must wait long at anchor, turning the propeller occasionally, if the engine allows, can help in some cases. A short inspection after two to three weeks tells the owner whether barnacles are starting, while they are still easy to remove.
Disposal of Removed Growth
Shells and growth removed from the hull sink to the seabed or are carried away by current, unless collected. Where practical, we limit the area cleaned in one go and use methods that keep debris near the work area. We follow port instructions and avoid cleaning heavily fouled hulls when this could release invasive species into sensitive waters. We note the nature of the growth in the report, which can be useful to the owner for biosecurity purposes. Where authorities ask for samples, we can collect a small sample for identification, packed and labelled properly.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q1. How fast do barnacles grow in warm water?
Visible barnacles can appear within 2 to 4 weeks, and become hard to remove within a few months.
Q2. Can barnacles damage the hull coating?
Yes. When removed carelessly, they can pull off paint, and growth itself can hide existing coating damage.
Q3. How long does barnacle removal take?
It depends on coverage, but often 1 to 3 working days for a full hull and 2 to 4 hours for a propeller.
Q4. What tools remove hard growth?
Stiff brushes, scrapers and pressure tools, chosen to suit the coating.
Q5. Why check sea chests for barnacles?
Blocked sea chests reduce cooling water flow and can cause engine alarms or shutdowns.
